Capturing Presidential Oath with Wi-Fi

The National Press Photographers Association explains how Chuck Kennedy made the picture of President Barack Obama taking the oath of office as the 44th President of the United States using a remote control camera.

He used a Canon EOS 5D Mark II with a 16-35mm, f 2.8 lens and Canon’s wireless transmitter. The camera was mounted inside a Pelican case to baffle the sound and anchored with a Bogen arm.

The camera was wired via Ethernet for transmission through a DSL line at Kennedy’s position behind the platform. The camera was triggered via a hardwire to eliminate radio interference. The photographs were sent to McClatchy-Tribune via the Canon WFT-E4A transmitter immediately via DSL line and moved on the pooled wire within minutes.

BridgeWave, a 60 and 80 GHz backhaul vendor, was used to provide a network backbone for mission critical agencies such as the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police, FBI, CIA, Secret Service and National Guard.
